This lithograph of a Ratak Chain chief known as Rarik is based on the 1816-17 voyage by explorer Otto Von Kotzebue. It is displayed at the Marshallese Cultural Center on Kwajalein. Men and women wore a rolled up pandanus leaf in their pierced earlobes. Some older people also had the upper edge of the outer ear pierced so that flowers could be inserted.

Eric & Cris leave vibrant legacy
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| By GIFF JOHNSON The Marshall Islands will say farewell next week to two Americans who have done more than most to bring Kwajalein and Marshall Islands communities together but who would be the first to modestly underplay their contributions. Dr. Eric and Cris Lindborg will leave the islands next Wednesday after close to 30 years at Kwajalein. From medical care and sports development to culture appreciation and womens exchanges, the Lindborgs have left their mark and will be missed by many throughout the Marshall Islands. Eric has been Kwajalein Hospitals chief of staff for 20 of his 27 years on |

| Fourth floor flight | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

By GIFF JOHNSON
The fourth floor of the capital building was evacuated this week because of unsafe conditions. Pieces of cement are falling all over the place, Public Works Minister Kejjo Bien told the Journal on Wednesday. The Presidents Office and Council of Iroij were moved to the ICC next door and are now setting up their offices. This is a problem thats been getting worse for more than four years, Bien said. The engineering firm Beca firm first warned the RMI government that the fourth floor, in particular, was unsafe because of rusting rebar that is causing concrete to crack. Currently, only Public Works engineers and staff are on the fourth floor clearing out rusted support beams and chunks of concrete. A plan for remedial work to fix the building is being worked on. Were working on a proposal for the next step, Bien said. The capital building is 15 years old. |

Seven months after taking office, the RMI government has endorsed US Senate bill 1756 in a letter sent this week to US Senator Jeff Bingaman. But the bill that has stalled since January waiting for a position statement from the RMI government has only a slim chance to gain approval in the final days of the current Congress before it breaks for the November election. There is a chance the bill can be reported, but that depends on there being a business meeting scheduled before adjournment on September 26 and there being no objection to S. 1756 and the staff amendment being considered, US Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee staff member Allen Stayman told the Journal Wednesday. President Litokwa Tomeing and the Cabinet of the Marshall Islands support the supplemental ex gratia compensation funding provided in Senate bill 1756, and we urge that the Senate Energy Committee schedule a markup of the November 7th Joint Staff Amendment of this bill at the earliest opportunity, Foreign Minister Tony deBrum and Cabinet Ministers Amenta Matthew and Jack Ading, who represent two of the four nuclear-affected atolls, said in the letter dated August 20, which was transmitted Tuesday August 27. Stayman confirmed Wednesday that he had just received the letter today and noted that most staff, and all Senators, will not be back in town until the week of September 8.
